What are Supersets?

What are Supersets?What are supersets?
Quite simply supersets are two exercises that are performed back to back with little to no rest in between. Supersets can contain exercises focusing on one body part or two opposing body parts.

What are the benefits of supersets?
Supersets are great when you have to fit a workout into a short time period. You can superset opposing body parts so that as one part is recovering from an exercise you can be working out the opposing body part. Supersets are also great for when you want to increase size and strength because you are constantly moving and keeping your muscles in a state of motion causing greater muscle break down (which we all know leads to more growth during recovery). The reason I like supersets the best is that it adds in an element of cardio into a typical workout. On non-superset days I will walk out of the gym with barely a sweat. On superset days I have to peel my shirt off at the end of the workout!

What are some examples of supersets?
Really you can superset anything… either the same body part or opposing body parts. I will use today’s workout as an example.
1. Superset Squats 4 sets (135/155/185/205) WITH Pull ups 12/10/8/8
2. Romanian Squats (with 25lbs plate) WITH Clean’n'Press 95/95/95/95
3. Lat-pull Down (130/140/150/150) WITH Pec-deck 80/90/100/110
4. 135lbs Bench press WITH dumbbell squat WITH crunches <– that was fun!

So the next time you are in the gym and want to try something new, add a few supersets into your workout and get that body working!
