Protein Dynamics in Exercise

I know the first thing I want to do after I exercise is go home and eat a big steak. Wait, no, that’s not right, that’s about the last thing I want to do after I exercise! That is, however, the thing I should do if I want to optimize my muscle building potential.

Well, let me start by saying you don’t have to eat a steak after exercise, but following a workout, you do need to think, “protein!” Why? Well, to get scientific, our bodies are in a constant state of protein-turnover. Proteins are the building blocks of our bodies—they’re in DNA, RNA, they provide structure to our cells and organs, our hair, skin, and nails. If a person isn’t consuming enough protein on a regular basis, their body will function at a sub-par level.

When exercise is brought into the mix, the rate of protein turnover increases because the exertion from exercise requires the body to use and rebuild more proteins. By consuming protein following exercise, you enable your body to more easily rebuild these proteins, reaching a state referred to as “positive nitrogen balance.” This positive state of nitrogen balance is the only time new cells can be recruited for building muscle.

I know this idea scares a lot of women off. They think, “I just want to be toned, thin, attractive. I don’t want to build muscle!” Here’s the thing, though…the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. Also, a pound of muscle is considerably more dense than fat—your body will be leaner and more contoured if you optimize your ability to build muscle. This is not about “getting big,” this is about getting the body you’ve always wanted.

So, drink a glass of milk, have a chicken sandwich, scramble some eggs. Consume some protein after your workout and watch your body change shape!

your absolutely right about the importance of protien replacement and turnover when you work out. This very same subject was covered in great detail in the fabulouse combined fitness and diet system ive been using to get me fit for my holidays this summer. The diet side of the system not only covers protien but the full spectrum of fats, carbohydrates etc. and the role they play when your working out or dieting. It was realy fascinating stuff.take a look at sahralou23.blogspot.com
