Why Exercise?
I have been exercising regularly for the last several years and without many missed workouts. There are several reasons that I exercise and I think these reasons give me enough drive to continue my workouts day in and day out. There are some days when the weather is cold, or I’m tired and I just don’t feel like exercising and those are the days I asked myself “why exercise?”. I mean really what’s the point? You are just going to get older and all those hard fought gains in the gym will eventually disappear. I once read that if you skip your workouts for several weeks you can lose up to 20% of your gains. Sure this is some arbitrary number, and there are probably a lot of factors to consider but isn’t that depressing!
So ask you, why do you exercise?
Exercise Alleviates my Stress
I had a girlfriend once who would use exercise as a way to reduce the stress that she encountered at work. The minute she walked in the door of the apartment she would change her clothes and head out the door for a solid 30 minute run down the boulevard. When she returned from her run the difference was visible! The stress had completely left and she was back to her normal happy self. Personally I am a relatively stress-free person so working out doesn’t help in this area but perhaps it does for you?
I Exercise for the Looks
Looking good goes hand in hand with feeling good so a lot of people will workout to look good. I can honestly say this is probably my primary reason for working out. When I go to the beach or get caught somewhere with my shirt off I want to feel good in the way I look and a few extra glances from the ladies never hurt. Don’t take this the wrong way and put me in a superficial light but working out can really help a person feel good in life.
For my Health
This is certainly a great reason to workout. You may not realize it but the time that you put in at the gym while your young will go a long way when you get older. I was recently visiting my grandmother and she made a comment about my need to constantly be working out. She just doesn’t understand it because when she was younger it was a different time, people didn’t realize the long-term benefits to exercise. Well we certainly do realize these benefits today and a daily exercise routine can go along way towards how you feel and your health when you get older. So if you don’t have a reason to exercise this is a pretty good one.
To Lose Weight
This is probably the most popular reason, which is why I saved it for last. It really is a combination of #2 and #3 because losing weight can do miracles for ones self esteem. Exercising to lose weight also can have an enormous impact on your health. Obesity is quickly becoming the number one illness in the United States and a daily exercise routine can go along way towards eliminating it.
So there are three solid reasons that one should partake in a daily exercise routine. Do you ever stop to ask yourself why you exercise? There is really no wrong answer because whatever the answer is if it keeps you in the gym than it’s a good one.
